SIDEWALK REFRESH

Equipment that sprays water has become a mania in Rio de Janeiro. The hottest season in the year turned out to be a frustration due to cloudy days, lots of rain and little heat. But the 2004 summer in Rio has some good news. Along the sidewalks at several beaches, in Aterro do Flamengo and at jogging track around the lagoon Refresh has become a sensation. For those who didn’t connect the name to the product, we’re talking about that equipment that sprays water to refresh people. All you have to do is press a button to get your cooling fog-just enough to get refreshed, without getting wet. “It’s a great invention. And it refreshes for real, mainly after you’ve been baked under the sun”, said 19 year old law student and frequent beach goer Isabella Nelas Fioretti.

The first acclimatization units were installed in December. Today they’re at 32 kiosks distributed along the seafront at Leme, Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Lagoa, Sao Conrado, Barra, Recreio, as well as at the jogging tracks in Aterro do Flamengo. The Refresh Station is 2.35 meters high and one meter wide with a lateral turn-on button and nozzles along the side to create the mist. The approval is so great that the city council plans to install another fourteen units-five in Lagoa and nine in the north area and in the suburbs-Sao Cristovao, Penha and Guadalupe.
